National Nutrition Agency (BGN) is pushing for the integration of nutrition education into the national school curriculum. The proposal is already in the hands of the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education (Kemendikdasmen), with the aim of nurturing healthy, intelligent, and globally competitive generations of Indonesians. According to Ikeu Tanziha, a member of BGN’s Nutrition Expert Council, structured nutrition education within schools is essential in building a strong foundation of nutritional understanding from an early age.
Nutrition goes beyond food; it shapes the future. Children who grasp nutrition concepts early on will grow up to be healthy, critical thinkers who can positively contribute to society, Ikeu emphasized. Schools offer the perfect platform to educate students systematically about nutrition, helping them understand the links between diet, health, and well-being while encouraging healthier lifestyle choices. The proposed curriculum will cover topics such as basic nutritional concepts, food groups, nutrients’ functions, and the impacts of unhealthy eating habits.
Furthermore, nutrition education will raise awareness about the significance of a balanced diet and empower students to make informed dietary choices, thus preventing diet-related illnesses like obesity and diabetes. Practical skills such as cooking and gardening will also be included, allowing students to apply their knowledge in daily life. The integration of nutrition education aims to foster a collaborative relationship between schools, families, and communities, promoting the message of balanced nutrition across society.
BGN’s educational efforts involve various initiatives like social media outreach through YouTube podcasts and promotional videos to support programs like the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) Program. The agency urges government bodies, schools, parents, media, and the public to endorse the amalgamation of nutrition education into the school curriculum as part of Indonesia’s Golden Generation 2045 vision. Ultimately, nutrition education equips students with the tools to lead healthy lives, aids in disease prevention, and enhances overall quality of life.
