The music world in Indonesia has recently welcomed a new band full of meaning. The Lanang Band, a pop rock band consisting of four talented teenagers with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), officially released their debut single titled ‘Aku Istimewa’ on January 17, 2026. Formed on October 1, 2025, in Jakarta, The Lanang Band was initiated by Mira Kohler, who wanted to nurture the artistic talents of Individuals with Special Needs (IBK) she encountered. The band’s name, “Lanang,” is taken from the Javanese language, meaning a boy, reflecting the identity of its four members. The band members are Fadil (20 years old), with autism Asperger syndrome, who plays guitar, drums, and vocals; Rafif (27 years old), with ADHD, on keyboards and vocals; Rifa (19 years old), with autism Asperger syndrome, on drums and vocals; and Vio (20 years old), with ADHD, on bass and backing vocals. Each member not only masters their primary instrument but also excels in various musical abilities beyond their roles on stage. ‘Aku Istimewa,’ originally sung by Rifa, was written by Yayang Ariswan. The song was later revamped and given a rock touch by Wawan TMG, making it sound more dynamic and colorful. Lyrically, the song depicts a child’s determination to prove their identity for the love of their mother, a hope that grows from the warmth of the heart, struggle, and affection of a mother who fills every aspect of their life. In a music landscape often dominated by romantic love stories, ‘Aku Istimewa’ serves as a bridge to a different kind of love: a child’s love for their mother, enduring through time. This song also boldly declares that talent knows no boundaries, including those typically associated with neurodivergent conditions.
